Winter preparation, hire one.

How We Prepare Our Hire Vans for Winter

How We Prepare Our Hire Vans for Winter

With the colder weather setting in, it’s important that every Hire One van leaving our yard must be ready to cope with winter conditions. At Hire One, we take a traditional, tried and tested, thorough approach to vehicle preparation – the same sensible checks that have kept motorists moving for decades.

Here’s how we get our vans ready for a cold snap:

1. Full Battery and Charging Check

Cold weather is hard on batteries. Every van’s battery is checked using a battery condition tester. If a battery shows any sign of weakness, it’s replaced. We also look for any visual problems and signs of corrosion.

2. Tyres Prepared for Cold and Wet Roads

We inspect tread depth, condition, and pressures on every hire. Winter brings slippery roads, so we make sure tyres are properly inflated and above recommended tread levels for maximum grip.

3. Antifreeze and Coolant Protection

We ensure every vehicle has the correct antifreeze mixture to prevent freezing in low temperatures. This is something far too many drivers overlook, but it’s essential.

4. Screenwash Rated for Sub-Zero Temperatures

Plain water freezes. Winter screen-wash doesn’t. All vans leave us filled with strong winter-grade screenwash so your visibility isn’t compromised.

5. Lights and Wipers Checked Properly

Shorter days mean more time on headlights. We carry out a full check of all bulbs, indicators, and brake lights. Wipers are tested for streaking and replaced if needed.

6. Heaters and Demisters Tested

Before any winter hire, we run the heater, cabin fans, and windscreen demister to make sure they work as they should. Slow-clearing screens are unsafe, so we don’t let vans go out unless everything is functioning correctly. We also warm up vehicles ahead of early morning hires to make your hire as safe and comfortable as possible.

7. Door Seals and Locks Lubricated

Cold weather makes locks and seals stiff. We apply silicone lubricant to prevent freezing doors or stuck locks – one of those simple steps that avoids a lot of hassle.

8. For Fridge Vans – Temperature System Checks

For our temperature-controlled vans, we run complete pre-hire tests:

  • Refrigeration system performance

  • Temperature stability

  • Standby operation

  • Door seal integrity

Cold weather doesn’t stop food safety requirements, and neither do we.
